Perennial grasses, widely creeping or floating, culms succulent, stoloniferous, 50-200 cm long, herbaceous, spongy at base, internodes solid. Leaf-blades linear or broadly linear, ligules membranous. Inflorescence usually a cylindrical spikelike panicle, with densely flowered branches. Spikelets narrowly lanceolate, 2-flowered, disarticulating, pedicel apices truncate or discoid. Glumes 2, very unequal, lower glume short, separated from second glume, 1-3 nerved, upper glume and lemma of lower floret larger and longer than lemma of perfect floret, palea tip not enclosed. Paleas awnless. Lodicules 2, fleshy, glabrous. Stamens 3. Caryopsis free.
