Description


Woody, erect or ascending herbs or undershrubs. Leaves opposite, linear-lanceolate or orbicular-obovate, petiolate. Inflorescence terminal and axillary, slender, many-flowered eventually elongate spike, rachis pilose-hairy. Flowers bisexual with persistent bracts and bracteoles. Bracteoles 2. Petals segments 4-5, subulate to lanceolate, ribbed and hardened. Stamens 2-5, alternating with as many quadrate, toothed or dorsally lamellate pseudostaminodes; filaments filiform, united at the membranous base into a cup, anthers 2-celled. Ovary 1-celled, ovule pendulous form a long basal funicle. Fruit a utricle, oblong or ovoid.
