Slender palms, stems tall, erect, ringed with leaf scars. Leaves pinnatisect, distal segments merging or blending together, sheaths closed, mostly  forming a  crownshaft. Inflorescence of infrafoliar spadix, borne below crownshaft, branched to 3 orders, spathes 3 or more, caducous, the lowest complete, the upper often bract-like. Male flowers : many, solitary or 2-nate, stamens 3 or 6, anthers basifixed. Female flowers : longer than males; perianth accrescent; sepals 3; petals 3; ovary 1-locular, stigmas 3, ovules basal. Fruit ellipsoid,  globose, or spindle-shaped. Seed 1 with basilar embryo.
