Description


Perennial grasses. Culms robust, 50-170 cm high. Leaf-blades linear, ligules shortly membranous. Inflorescence a single raceme, fragile, cylindrical, with 2 sessile spikelets sunk at each node, internodes clavate. Sessile spikelets 2-flowered, falling entire, callus truncate with prominent central peg, pedicelled spikelets reduced or absent; glumes 2, subequal, pubescent; lower glume coriaceous, 2-keeled, smooth or sculptured, winged or not; upper glume 3-nerved; lower floret reduced, upper floret bisexual; lemma entire, awnless, glabrous, 3-nerved; palea awnless, 2-nerved or nerveless. Lodicules fleshy, glabrous. Stamens 3. Ovary glabrous.
