Perennial or annual grasses, culms trailing, ascending from decumbent base, internodes mostly with a decurrent villous line adaxial to the subtending leaf. Leaf-blades broadly linear to ovate, often minutely cross-veined. Inflorescence of racemes borne along a central axis, rachis narrow, bearing paired spikelets. Spikelets lanceolate to oblong; glumes subequal, half to three-quarters spikelet lengths, both or at least the lower awned, lower glume abaxial. Lower florets barren or rarely male, usually without a palea. Upper lemmas subcoriaceous, margin broadly clasping the sides of paleas. Caryopsis oblong.
