Description


Herbs, hirsute or villous. Leaves opposite, entire. Inflorescence terminal or axillary, solitary, sessile or sub-sessile heads or short spikes. Flowers capitate or spicate, white or coloured, hermaphrodite. Bracts scarious, persistent, bracteoles keeled, winged or crested, often coloured. Tepals 5, free, shortly joined at the base, woolly. Stamens 5, linear, filaments united below into a long tube, cleft at the top with a one-celled anther in each cleft. Ovary sub-globose or turbinate, 1-celled, ovule 1, stigmas 2. Fruit utricle, ovoid or oblong, indehiscent. Seeds lenticular, ovoid or reniform, smooth.
