Description


Annual or perennial grasses. Culms tufted or rhizomatous, prostrate to over 3 m tall. Leaf-blades linear to linear-lanceolate, ligule ciliate. Inflorescence a spike-like panicle, cylindrical, dense, bearing one or more sessile or pedicelled spikelets subtended by an involucre of bristles, involucres deciduous with spikelets. Spikelets lanceolate to obovate, 2-flowered, dorsally compressed, disarticulating; glumes membranous, unequal; lower glume sometimes absent; lower floret sterile or staminate, upper floret perfect; lemmas membranous or chartaceous to indurate; paleas membranous or absent. Lodicules 2, minute. Stamens 3. Caryopsis dorsally compressed.
