deciduous with spikelets. Spikelets lanceolate to obovate, 2-flowered, dorsally
compressed, disarticulating; glumes membranous, unequal; lower glume sometimes
absent; lower floret sterile or staminate, upper floret perfect; lemmas
membranous or chartaceous to indurate; paleas membranous or absent. Lodicules
2, minute. Stamens 3. Caryopsis dorsally compressed.
