Description


Perennial, large clump forming grasses. Culms erect, compressed. Leaf-blades linear, ligule a ciliate membrane, leaf-sheaths compressed. Inflorescence a panicle, racemes numerous, fragile, internodes and pedicels filiform. Spikelets  paired, awned or awnless, 2-flowered, dorsally compressed. Sessile spikelets larger with a perfect floret and a barren, pedicellate spikelets staminate, pair falling as a unit. Glumes of both spikelets chartaceous, bearing papillose-based stiff hairs, equal, lower glumes rounded on back;  upper glumes boat-shaped, awned or awnless, margin ciliate. Lemmas hyaline, ciliate. Paleas absent.
