Description


Annual or perennial grasses. Culms 2.0-4.5 m tall, internodes solid. Leaf-blades flat, broad, ligule a fringed membrane. Inflorescence terminal and axillary, spikelets unisexual, separate into male and female inflorescences. Female inflorescence axillary, enclosed in enveloping foliaceous sheaths; spikelets all sessile in many longitudinal rows; partially sunk in thickened axis, glumes and lemmas chaffy, awnless, lower floret sterile, styles single, very long, silky, pendulous. Male inflorescence terminal, of digitate or paniculate racemes; one spikelet subsessile, other pedicelled, both florets staminate. Caryopsis plump at maturity.
