all sessile in many longitudinal rows; partially sunk in thickened axis, glumes
and lemmas chaffy, awnless, lower floret sterile, styles single, very long,
silky, pendulous. Male inflorescence terminal, of digitate or paniculate
racemes; one spikelet subsessile, other pedicelled, both florets staminate.
Caryopsis plump at maturity.
