Small, subdeciduous trees or shrubs. Leaves simple, alternate, serrate or crenate, shining, chartaceous or sub-coriaceous. Flowers conspicuous, yellow, pedunculate, bracts cauducous. Sepals 5, persistent, pale green, reddish in fruit. Petals 5-10, in 1-2 whorls, deciduous. Stamens numerous with more or less persistent filaments, anthers opening with two apical pores, deciduous. Ovary 3-10 lobed, ovule solitary in each lobe, styles connate or sometimes free at apex. Fruits of 3-10 drupes.
