Description


Trees, bole straight, buttresses prominent. Leaf nerves forming an intra-marginal vein, petioles distinctly geniculate. Flowers in lax, pendent racemes. Calyx united at the base into a tube round the ovary. Petals broadly ovate, falling off separately. Stamens 10 or more, the outer slightly shorter than the inner, connective of anthers prolonged into a long awn. Ovary sub-inferior with a distinct, thick, fleshy stylopodium, styles 3, sometimes 4-6. Nut globose, enclosed in and adnate to most of its part in the fruiting calyx tube, splitting open at the apex irregularly.
