Small, tufted perennial, rarely annual grasses.
Leaf-blades filiform, ligule membranous with ciliate margin. Inflorescence a
single, straight, or coiled terminal spike, spikelets half immersed in cavities
of rachis, rachis tough or fracturing horizontally. Spikelets 1 to 2-flowered;
lower glume obscure or absent, upper glume exceeding and concealing the sunken
floret, coriaceous, 1-3 nerved, acute to awned; lemma lightly keeled, hyaline,
glabrous to pilose, emarginate to bidentate, mucronate, 1-3 nerved, rarely
awned; palea narrow, keels smooth. Caryopsis obovate, apex 2-mucronate.
