Description


Annuals or sometimes perennials. Leaf-blades short, base slightly cordate, often spiny-ciliate on margin, ligule a membranous rim. Inflorescence a cylindrical raceme, with shortly pedicelled solitary spikelets borne directly on main axis, falling entire, reduced branch of rachis persistent as a yellowish stub. Spikelets linear-elliptic, floret 1; glumes with  long capillary awn, equal or subequal, similar, membranous to cartilaginous; lower glume tightly embracing upper one; lemmas hyaline, narrowly keeled, smooth; paleas flattened, nerveless, rachilla not produced beyond  floret. Caryopsis linear-subulate, acute.
