Description


Annual or perennial grasses, tufted or sometimes rhizomatous or stoloniferous. Leaf-blades linear to narrowly lanceolate, ligules ciliate. Inflorescence an open or contracted panicle, rarely spikelike or spiciform. Spikelets solitary, floret 1, fusiform, sessile or pedicellate, slightly or not compressed, rachilla disartculating above glumes; glumes unequal, usually shorter than lemmas, obtuse, acute or acuminate, 1-nerved or nerveless;  lemma elliptic to narrowly ovate, 1-3 nerved,  rounded on back, awnless; palea equal to or shorter than lemma. Caryopsis globose to ellipsoid.
