Perennial, trunkless, clump forming, glabrous herbs. Leaves simple, distichous, oblong-lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, midrib prominent, with short basal sheath, petioles long. Inflorescence terminal, with distichous, boat-shaped or spathe-like bracts subtending flowers. Flowers bisexual, irregular. Tepals 6, 2-cycled, outer cycle of sepals, free, inner cycle of petals, strongly irregular, lateral petals larger than the median. Stamens 5, all fertile, anthers linear, 2-celled. Carpels 3, ovary 3-loculed, ovules many per locule, placentation axile, styles long, stigmas 3. Fruit a capsule. Seeds numerous, arillate.
