Rhizomatous, tall, stout perennial herbs, pseudostem robust, rhizome horizontal, aromatic. Leaves petiolate, lanceolate-oblong. Inflorescence a spike, radical, conic or ovoid on a short peduncle, sunken in the ground or little above; bracts lanceolate, each subtending a single flower, outer involucral bracts large, broad, imbricating, red, bracteoles thin, tubular. Calyx spathaceous, thin. Corolla-tube long, lobes connivent. Labellum tongue-shaped, side at base convolute over stamen. Staminode absent. Filaments short, broad, anther cells divergent, crest absent. Fruit an oblong capsule, thin walled. Seeds numerous, angular.
