Description


Perennial, rhizomatous, erect herbs. Leaves simple, large, alternate, pinnately nerved, petioles sheathing. Inflorescence a terminal raceme, or panicle. Flowers bisexual, large, zygomorphic, brightly coloured. Sepals 3, small, persistent. Petals 3, connate, adnate to staminal column, shorter than petaloid staminodes. Stamens 3, 1 partially perfect, all connate below, lobes unequal, all petaloid, one with a 1-celled anther adnate to one of its edges, others similar but larger and sterile. Carpels 3, united. Ovary inferior, 3-locular, ovules many, placentation axile. Fruit a 3-valved capsule, warty.
