Description


Caulescent herbs, erect or prostrate, occasionally with tuberous, swollen rhizomes. Leaves simple, both basal and cauline or all cauline, petiole sheathing at base. Inflorescence a laxly dichotomous, terminal cyme. Flowers bracteate, pedicellate, bracts herbaceous, sepals 3, herbaceous, petals 3, lobes subequal. Staminodes white, often tinged, outer staminodes 2, petaloid, exceeding corolla lobes, cucullate staminodes with median or subterminal appendage, callose staminode obovoid, with petaloid apex. Ovary 1-loculed, style adnate to staminal tube, stigma oblique. Fruit a capsule, dehiscent. Seed 1, arillus green.
