Description


Paludose or aquatic herbs. Stems erect or obliquely erect, rootstock spongy, short and oblique. Leaves radical, long-petioled. Inflorescence racemose or sub-umbelliform, shortly peduncled, enveloped by leaf-sheath when young. Flowers 10-20, very showy, perianth-tube slightly curved, lobes ovate to ovate-oblong or obovate, lilac, posterior lobe with a bright yellow, blue bordered median blotch. Stamens 6, dimorphic: 1 with filament long, anther basifixed, blue, large, other 5 subequal, anthers basifixed, yellow, small. Ovary 3-celled, placentation axile, styles filiform. Fruit a capsule, ellipsoid. Seeds oblong.
