Perennial herbs, with a stout, tuberous rhizome, stems climbing, or less often erect, branches spreading or erect. Leaves cauline, simple, alternate, opposite, or in whorls of 3, subsessile, narrowing gradually to an apical coiled tendril. Flowers few, large, axillary, solitary or somewhat subcorymbose. Perianth 6, petaloid, free, spreading or reflexed, persistent. Stamens 6, inserted at base of petals, filaments filiform, anthers versatile. Ovary superior, 3-loculed, ovules many, oblong-ovoid, axile, style filiform, 3-lobed. Fruit a septicidal capsule, many-seeded. Seeds subglobose, testa bright red, spongy.
