Terrestrial, rhizomatous herbs. Stem erect, reedlike, enclosed by tubular sheaths. Leaves plicate, base decurrent into an amplexicaul sheath, articulate. Inflorescences many flowered racemes, arising laterally from nodes, erect or ascending, pedunculate; sterile bracts amplexicaul; floral bracts caducous, lanceolate. Flowers small to medium-sized. Sepals and petals similar, free, spreading to reflexed; lip adnate to column base, 3-lobed. Column stout, winged; anther terminal, incumbent; rostellum ovate; stigma suborbicular; pollinia 8, in 2 groups of 4, narrowly obovoid, waxy, viscidium globose.
