Description


Perennial, tufted grasses, culms slender, erect or decumbent. Leaf-blades  linear or lanceolate, sometimes aromatic, ligules membranous. Inflorescence  digitate, sub-digitate or corymbiform racemes, with many-jointed rachis,  longitudinally grooved, spikelets separately deciduous, without homogamous spikelet pairs. Sessile spikelets dorsally compressed, callus obtuse; lower glume mostly cartilaginous, broadly convex to slightly concave, sometimes with 1-3 circular pits, acute; upper lemma entire, with a glabrous awn. Pedicelled spikelets much like the sessile, or smaller.  Caryopsis oblong, slightly dorsally compressed.
