Description


Tall to short or subterranean palms, stems clustered or less often solitary, ringed with prominent leaf scars. Leaves 5-11, pinnate or occasionally undivided, with  upper segments merging together, leaf-sheaths closed, usually forming a  crownshaft, prominently 3-6 veined. Inflorescence a spadix, branched to one order, borne below crownshaft, rarely among leaves, becoming pendulous,  spathes solitary. Flowers monoecious, androgynous, ternate, a female between two males, obliquely 3-quetrous, females much smaller than males. Fruit ovoid or ellipsoid or spindle shaped, pericarp fibrous, brightly coloured.
