Description


Perennial, rhizomatous, erect herbs. Leaves simple, large, alternate, pinnately nerved, petioles sheathing. Inflorescence terminal raceme, or panicle. Flowers bisexual, large, zygomorphic, brightly coloured. Sepals 3, small, persistent. Petals 3, connate, adnate to staminal column, shorter than petaloid staminodes. Stamens 3, 1 partially perfect, all connate below, lobes unequal, all petaloid, one with a 1-celled anther adnate to one of its edges, others similar but larger and sterile. Carpels 3, united. Ovary inferior, 3-locular, ovules many, placentation axile. Fruit capsule, 3-valved, warty.
