Shrubs or small trees. Leaves lanceolate to
ovate, strigose to villous, rarely glabrous. Inflorescence terminal or in
distal leaf axils, cymose, rarely solitary or in panicles. Bracts ovate,
deciduous or persistent. Flowers 5-merous. Sepals triangular to lanceolate,
deciduous. Petals obovate. Anthers usually beaked, opening by a single pore.
Ovary 5-locular, adnate to the hypanthium. Fruit a dry or fleshy capsule,
splitting irregularly, or an indehiscent berry. Seeds minute, embedded in pulp.
