Description


Large, woody, climbing shrubs. Leaves opposite or subopposite. Inflorescence short spikes, axillary and terminal. Flowers white or red, 5-merous. Calyx tube prolonged and slender above the ovary. Petals 5. Stamens 10, short, biseriate, inserted inside and near the mouth of the upper receptacle. Ovary 1-celled, ovules 2-4, pendulous from the apex of the cell. Fruits dry, coriaceous, oblong, narrowed at both ends, 5-angled or 5-winged, sub-indehiscent. Seed 1, longitudinally sulcate.
