Perennial, mostly tufted grasses, culms erect. Leaf-blades linear, ligule membranous or line of hairs. Inflorescence panicle, lax, branches filiform, whorled, each branch bears a raceme, each raceme usually reduced to a triad of 1 sessile and 2 pedicellate spikelets. Sessile spikelets laterally compressed, callus  acute to pungent; lower glume cartilaginous, upper glume shortly awned; lower floret reduced to  hyaline lemma; upper floret perfect, lemmas, bidentate or entire, awned; paleas small or suppressed. Pedicellate spikelets, well-developed or reduced. Caryopsis  ellipsoid.
