deciduous or evergreen scandent shrubs. Leaves alternate or spirally arranged,
petioled, dentate, crenate, subentire or finely ciliate serrulate.
Inflorescence pyramidal or narrow raceme-like thyrses. Flowers 5-merous, small,
unisexual or bisexual. Calyx campanulate, persistent, lobes imbricate or
valvate. Disk usually membranous, cupular, fleshy and flat, entire or 5-lobed,
lobes alternate with the stamens. Fertile stamens inserted on margin of disk.
Ovary free from disk, 3-celled. Capsules subglobose, rarely subcylindric,
tipped by persistent style, loculicidally 3-valved. Seeds 1-6, embedded in
fleshy, red aril.
