Medium-sized to large deciduous trees, often thorny. Leaves digitate, on long petiole, stipules caducous. Flowers solitary or clustered, congregated at the end of branchlets, appearing before leaves. Calyx campanulate or cup-shaped, 3 to 5-lobed or truncate, lobes leathery. Corolla free, long, obovate or oblong, erect or reflexed. Stamens numerous, basally adnate and then arranged in 5-10 groups, anthers reniform. Ovary superior, 5-locular, style single, stigmas 5. Fruit capsule, smooth or with 5 longitudinal ridges, loculicidally 5-valved. Seeds embedded in woolly, cottony hairs.
