Perennial, creeping grasses, much-branched. Leaf-blades lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, veins prominent, ligules membranous. Inflorescence an open or condensed panicle of pedicellate spikelets. Spikelets all alike, strongly laterally compressed, distinctly gibbous, 2-flowered, falling entire; glumes, dissimilar, lower shorter, subacute, upper gibbous, obtuse. Florets dissimilar, lower sterile;  upper floret perfect, strongly gibbous on back, lemmas indurate, smooth or minutely pitted, margin involute, tip with a distinct callus crest; paleas of similar texture on back, margin hyaline. Stamens 3. Caryopsis similar to upper florets.
