Description


Palm-like woody shrubs or trees. Leaves linear or lanceolate, sessile or petiolate, crowded at top. Inflorescence of large panicles, bracts small. Flowers small, bracts scarious, pedicels articulate near their tops. Perianth 6, coralline, oblong, basally connate or cohering, free above, lobes narrow, equal or inner ones longer. Stamens 6, inserted on perianth, filaments filiform or flattened, anthers versatile. Carpels 3, united, ovary superior, trilocular, ovules many, style filiform, stigma capitate  or 3- lobed. Fruit a berry, globose, 3-lobed. Seeds obovoid or somewhat compressed, shining black.
