Shrubs or trees, often spiny. Leaves entire or serrate-crenate. Flowers small, unisexual, or rarely bisexual in short axillary cymes, sometimes solitary. Sepals 4-5, slightly connate at the base. Petals absent. Male flowers: stamens 15 to numerous. Female flowers: 4 – 5, ovary sessile, 2-8 celled, on a glandular disc, placentas 4-8, pluriovulate, styles as many as the locules, free or connate, persistent, stigmas small, inflated or shortly 2-lobed. Fruit a drupe, seeds 4-16. Seeds obovoid-ellipsoid, somewhat flattened.
