Trees or shrubs, usually armed with stipular spines. Leaves simple, alternate, petiolate, mostly 3-nerved from the base. Flowers in axillary fascicles or peduncled cymes, bisexual. Calyx of 5-triangular sepals. Corolla of 5 petals or sometimes absent. Disc 5-10 lobed. Stamens 5, opposite to and enclosed in petals. Ovary 2-4 celled, styles 2-3, free or connate, with small papillose stigmas. Fruits drupaceous.
