Climbers. Tendrils leaf-opposed or absent,
usually twice bifid, sometimes tree, borne on opposite leaves, never on
peduncles. Leaves palmately 5-foliolate, stipules persistent. Flowers in
pseudo-axillary or terminate peduncled cymes, bisexual, 4-merous. Calyx
cup-shaped, subentire. Corolla cylindric, constricted above swollen base,
petals free, spreading. Disc of 4 large glands, adnate to ovary but free from
each other. Ovary 2-celled, styles subulate, stigmas minute, bifid. Fruit a
1-seeded berry. Seed elliptical, usually rounded at the base.
