Description


Herbs, shrubs or small trees. Leaves simple, alternate or spirally arranged, petiolate, papery or subleathery, entire, glabrous or pilose. Flowers bisexual, zygomorphic, bracts 1-3, bracteoles 2. Sepals 5, usually free, unequal, 2 inner often petaloid. Petals 3, upper 2 basally adnate to staminal tube, lower one boat-shaped, clawed. Stamens 8, filaments united at base forming staminal sheath, anthers basifixed. Capsules compressed, often winged. Seeds 2, oblong, usually black, densely or sparsely hairy.
