Description


Tall trees. Leaves simple, alternate, entire, coriaceous, petiole with one or two pairs of deciduous appendages, stipules absent. Inflorescence axillary and terminal. Flowers small, polygamo-dioecious, bracteate, perigynous. Calyx 5-lobed, cupular, lobes imbricate. Petals 5, connate below and adnate to edge of disk, disk lining calyx tube in male, obscure in female flowers. Stamens 5, inserted on edge of disk, adnate to the petals below. Carpels 3-5, syncarpous, ovary inferior, 1-loculed, 1-ovuled, styles 3-5, terminal, stigma clavate. Fruit a resinous, acrid, subcompressed, ovoid or oblong drupe, stone coriaceous. Seeds parietal, embryo thick with large cotyledons.
