Tall, erect or subscandent shrubs, woody. Leaves alternate or crowded, sessile or petiolate, entire, with strong costae or many fine parallel nerves. Flowers in terminal racemes, panicles, heads or umbels, bracts small, perianth corolline, campanulate, infundibulifrom or tubular, 6-lobed. Stamens 6, adnate to base of  perianth-tube, filaments filiform, or flattened, anthers versatile. Carpels 3, ovary trilocular, style filiform, stigma capitate, ovule solitary. Fruit a berry, 2 or 3-lobed, globose. Seeds with small embryo, globose or angled.
