Perennial herbs, with erect pseudostems. Leaves basal, leaf-sheaths embracing each other forming the pseudostem, lamina lanceolate or lanceolate-oblong. Inflorescence terminal, a raceme of many-flowered monochasial cymes or cincinni,  cincinnal bract brightly coloured. Flowers pedicellate, bisexual, zygomorphic, calyx and corolla petaloid, basally united into a short tube. Stamens 6, 5 fertile, 6th one a staminode, opposite the free sepal. Carpels 3, united, ovary 3-celled, one ovule per locule, style one, stigma capitate or 3-lobed. Fruit 1-3 seeded drupe, indehiscent. Seeds exarillate.
