An erect herb, stems dark green, 40-70 cm tall. Leaves mostly crowded at stem apex, ovate to elliptic or lanceolate, base often unequal, apex long acuminate, primary lateral nerves 4 or 6 per side, secondary ones indistinct, petiole 5-24 cm long, sheathing. Peduncles 3 together, 12 cm long. Spathe oblong-lanceolate, long acuminate. Spadix cylindric, c 2/3 spathe length. Male zone  2-3 cm long, stamens free, apex truncate, quadrangular, anthers dehiscing by a pore. Female zone 5-8 mm long, style short, stigma disciform. Ovary subglobose, unilocular, ovule 1, placentation basal. Fruit berry, oblong, red when ripe. Seed oblong, c 1.7 cm long. Flowering and fruiting: March-April. Ecology : Hill slopes, dense forests. Use : Planted as ornamental.
