An aquatic herb, rootstock stoloniferous. Leaves floating, 6-15 cm long, oblong to linear- oblong or oblong-lanceolate, 3-5 nerved, opaque, cross nervules distinct, apex acute or obtuse, base cuneate, rounded, or cordate, petiole slender, much longer than the blade, submerged leaves membranous, transparent, with distinct cross nervules. Inflorescence a terminal, lax or dense-flowered spike. Flowers bright pink or bluish purple. Tepals 2, obovate to lanceolate, white. Stamens 6, anthers bluish purple. Carpels 3. Fruit of 4-8-seeded  follicles, subglobose, exceeding the tepals, smooth. Seeds oblong, striate, ribbed. Flowering and fruiting: August-October. Ecology : Marshy places, ditches, ponds and streams. Use:  Rootstock edible.
