A large shrub or small tree, up to 3 m high, stems simple, often branched. Leaves crowded or close together at the end of the stem, 50-8010-12 cm, linear, abruptly narrowed at apex, linear-lanceolate, petiole deeply channelled, clasping, green or variously coloured. Inflorescence a panicle, 30-60 cm long. Flowers small, sub-sessile, yellowish-white, lilac or reddish. Perianth c. 1.5 cm long, segments 6, erect, about as long as the tube. Stamens 6, inserted on the perianth. Ovary 3-loculed, ovules many per locule, style exerted, stigma capitate. Fruit a berry, c. 1 cm in diameter, embryo subequal to the albumen. Flowering and fruiting: January-May. Ecology : Planted in gardens and parks. Use: Ornamental.
